By crossing Acapulco Gold and Colombian Gold with a short, fast-flowering, and resilient Afghani landrace, Sam and the team at Sacred Seeds managed to create one of the most quintessential cannabis strains to date. At present, Skunk is still easily one of the most reliable strains on the market. Whether grown under the strong California sun or in a Dutch greenhouse, these plants manage to easily adapt to their environment and produce hefty harvests of potent, super smelly weed in a matter of weeks.
While it was first developed in the 70s, Skunk really got famous in the 80s after Sam moved to Amsterdam. The finer details of the story are shrouded in mystery, but people generally agree that Sam moved to the Netherlands after having completed a stint in jail in the US. Skunk really became popular on the market in the s when its creator, Sam The Skunkman, brought his Skunk seeds to the Netherlands. Skunk buds are big, heavy, and usually covered in a frosty layer of trichomes. They produce a very strong, long-lasting euphoria that many would describe as uplifting and invigorating.
Arguably the most attractive aspect of Skunk is its pungent aroma. Anyone who has had the pleasure to smoke or grow a proper Skunk variety will know that even a tiny bag of this stuff can fill an entire room with an unmistakable, citrusy-sweet aroma.
The creation of Skunk really underlies a huge shift in the cannabis industry. I am doing my own research for an article on the very first "Hybrid"? By 'Hybrid' I specifically mean the very first strain crossing sativa landraces with 'Afghani' in California, sometime during the late 60s early 70s.
Tim Alchimia Hi, thanks for your comment and question. I'm no cannabis historian but everything I've read points to the first hybrid being Skunk, as a cross between Colombian Gold and an Afghan Indica. For obvious reasons, the true history of these varieties and their creation is clouded with many inaccuracies, mistruths and contradictions, but one name that comes up a few times apart from Skunkman Sam, of course is that of "Jingles", who some claim created this first hybrid in before passing it on to the Sacred Seeds collective, who later added Acapulco Gold to Skunk's genetic mix.
I'm afraid that's the best I can do, I hope you have success in fitting the pieces together, please let us know how you get on! Best wishes and happy growing! Aldo Rey Kelley Good post Some of those seeds were brought to next army ranger duty in Darien Mts of Panama to be crossed with a shorter smellier 'Persian Blue Viola, bloomed Anyone who has experienced the real original skunk I believe would tend to agree.. The original strain possessed many qualities which were unique and unlike any other strain.
Killer bud it was. I miss it and haven't seen it in about 30 years unfortunately. Gone maybe, but definitely not forgotten. C Skunk.. Original skunk came from a mountain in Arkansas in the 70s I know for sure its origins and will say no more other than the confusion about where it came from involves someone cultivating it in creeks from Mississippi to Michigan..
He was the first person to ask 20 for a gram and everyone told him he was crazy Untill they smoked some.. Buzzz Hi My youth was in the 70s and 80s.
Gold was a lot bettr than the red. Colour was actually gold and was quite cerebral. As far as skunk goes, its not pure indica or pure anything. But it does breed fairly true. Its not gone though.
I have the old school line. Done 2nd week october outdoors in southern ontario canada. I made plenty of seeds and they all stink like skunk. Growing you can smell it feet away if theres a slight wind ,and with it in your pocket you wouldnt enter a public place of business when it was illegal.
Ive had many people visit and ask me if a skunk sprayed by my house. When completely finished its acrid. Todays skunk 1 is not skunk at all. I have no idea why people accept it as skunk. It was called skunk for a reason and not because of a sweet pleasant smell.
Its still a force to be reckoned with and even aftr all these years , it and original c99 are still my favorite homegrown. Indoor or outdoor its great and reliable. Don I disagree some of you folks get skunk 1 mixed up with the roadkill skunk from the 70s and 80s is not the same skunk as skunk 1 I know because my father is a breeder and used to get the pure landrace skunk all the time it was only around in the 70s and 80s and short part of the 90s, I saw it twice in my life.
Tim Alchimia Hi Don, thanks for your input. Maybe I'm just an optimist but I refuse to believe that these things are gone forever, either some old school farmer out there still has the genetics, or the "Skunk gene" is out there hidden in some landrace Afghan seeds, just waiting to be rediscovered. Thanks again, all the best and happy growing! Where is good skunk I bought skunk seeds from Seeds Man and didnt even need to filter air. Tim Alchimia Yes, I hear the same thing all over the place these days.
People complaining that Skunk just isn't Skunk anymore. From what I can tell, you can blame prohibition for this, as the strong, dead skunk odour was bred out of Skunk, towards the more "sweet" side of the genetics so that the plants wouldn't give themselves away so much during flowering, leading to possible trouble with the law, neighbours etc. In conversations about this subject, I've heard many people speculate that the famous roadkill skunk aroma is actually from the Afghan side of the cross, so plenty of people have been exploring the possibilities of Afghan genetics, some claiming to have found the original roadkill phenotype.
I'd have a look at banks like Mr Nice, Underground Originals and Ripper Seeds to name three banks working with some of these genetics. All the best and happy growing! Cannabis is not typically thought of as addictive in the same way as heroin, cocaine, or even alcohol, where withdrawal can have serious physical health effects.
However it can cause irritability, sleep disruption and other effects that make heavy users dependent. Join thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their replies.
