After removing the side cover and seeing the nasty sludge build up, it was apparent why the motor had stopped working. Engines that have been run on non-detergent oil will often have a thick sludge build-up. I was anxious to remove the cylinder head to see how the piston and valves looked, and this is what I found.
Lots of cleaning followed, mostly using disposable shop towels and brake parts cleaner. Everything that came off the motor was labeled and put into boxes. After the engine was disassembled, I wire-wheeled all bolt threads clean, then cleaned and tapped all threaded bolt holes. With the exception of the ones that were missing or broken, I was able to re-use the original nuts, bolts, and washers.
